Ellen van Dijk has been left fearing for her Paris 2024 Olympic Games hopes after it was revealed the injuries she sustained in a horror crash are far more extensive than initially thought.
The Dutch rider fractured her ankle after colliding with a trailer at a roundabout while out training alongside her partner and journalist Benjamin de Bruijn. De Bruijn later revealed that van Dijk's injuries were far more extensive than first reported.
The 37-year-old van Dijk, who won the time trial event at the world championships in 2013, 2021 and 2022, collapsed to the ground in agony after the impact and was rushed to hospital.
Despite the setback, van Dijk believes that competing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is still possible, but admits it would be a "small miracle" if she were able to recover in time.
